hats as art objects

For many years, Heike Thamm has been known for her unusual hats, which she mostly produces as unique pieces. Her customers soon asked for handbags to match. She started to create them to great success. Her handbag designs use similar materials and techniques as her hat creations. In her work, traditional processing techniques are reinterpreted in an innovative way.

Birgit Wortmann

Birgit Wortmann creates scarves and accessories for men and women from delicate silk yarns. Using a process which she specially developed, Wortmann first dyes her yarns and then weaves them on a handloom. She creates special, unusual effects – flowing transitions as well as different weaving patterns – which characterize the uniqueness of each piece. Wortmann’s scarves and stoles fall in a very light, pleasant drape, thanks to her use of fine silk yarn.

RECYCLING DESIGN made of old “news” papers

transFORMATE is a meshwork design made of recycled newspapers. Folded stripes of old “news” papers are interwoven and transformed into a new (id)entity such as boxes, briefcases, shopping bags and up to folding screens and mats as well. The printed text literally gets woven into texture. A particular finish provides a moisture repellent and abrasion-resistant surface. In combination with a special type of weaving a sturdy and nearly hard-wearing durability will be achieved. Newsprint will receive a light sepia brown patina with time, which will provide an appealing contrast to the clear and precise shape of transFORMATE. Each transFORMAT is thoroughly and individually manufactured and is thus unique.

Foulard

The French word for a silk scarf is foulard. The word is composed by fou (insane) and lard (bacon).
About 1500 years ago a Chinese silkworm found his way to France to produce silk in Europe. In the country of the « bon vivants » it accidentally landed in a butcher’s shop on top of a slice of bacon. Hmm, so soft and tasty, thought the vegetarien with surprise and with verve started to build a cocoon. As the cocoon grew more and more the butcher’s wife, a sophisticated lady, catched an eye on it. Is this bacon going insane, she thought but shortly after she spotted the little worm who found itself in a new paradise. I will make the most beautiful scarf from your silk, she promised and kept feeding the silkworm with the best bits of bacon she could find. After three month she was wearing proudly the most shiny silk scarf that she would call with affection my „foulard“
